Gender gap in math starts in kindergarten

According to a study published by the American Education Research Association, Gender gaps in math accomplishment and teacher expectations begin to crystallize since kindergarten. Teachers continuously underestimated girl's math abilities. Even though the gender gap begins early among high-achieving math students, the idea, boys are stronger than girls, is accepted to all elementary school students. Based on societal expectation, there is tendency for elementary school girls to follow behavioral roles of school closely, Weinberg said. In order to fix it, being aware of unconscious biases and behaviors of educators and parents is critical step of diminishing the gender gap in math.

  1. Allen, do you think this gender gap exists in Korea too? Do you have any ideas about how to fix it?

  2. yes, I do. I read an article related to this matter. According to statistics conducted by Ministry of Employment and Korea Employment Information Service, the number of women students in college of engineering is only 17%. In addition, solely, about 19% is working in the industry. In order to fix this problem, promoting that gender gap in math doesn't exist for people including parents, teachers, and people in the field related to math can help fix it. Another one is to change stereotype towards gender role for jobs.
