Today it’s a groundhog day. It is a traditional holiday
celebrated on February 2nd each year. It began in Punxsutawney,
Pennsylvania in 1886. Germans have long used hedgehogs to predict weather,
groundhogs were the closest U.S. mammal German immigrants could find. According
to the legend, Punxsutawney Phil, the legendary groundhog comes out from his
den, after his long winter’s sleep and decides the weather. It is believed that
if Phil sees his shadow, it will return to his den and winter weather will extend
for six more weeks. If it’s cloudy and he does not see his shadow, Phil takes
it as a sign of spring and stays above the ground.
Most people celebrate this
day with throwing parties, attending festivals, take part in activities, food
and more.
This year Phil did not see his shadow, predicting an early
spring!!
Happy early spring friends!!
